Lotus Tutoring
Evidence-based teaching for people with dyslexia and other learning differences
About Lotus Tutoring
Hello and welcome to my website! My name is Kathy and I’m a teacher with thirteen years’ experience in both mainstream and SEN classrooms. I have taught a range of ages and stages, and now exclusively teach children who are of primary school age.

I cater for a young person’s learning needs by using engaging, memorable and age-appropriate multi-sensory teaching and learning strategies. My aim is to intervene at the point where learning has broken down and to remediate any needs by using a learner’s strengths, giving him or her the optimum chance of success.

I view the blossoming of the lotus flower as an analogy of the learning process, hence the name Lotus Tutoring. In order to bloom, the lotus flower must first grow through muddy pond water. In spite of such seemingly adverse conditions, it finally flowers when it reaches the surface. I liken this to a learner having to overcome many challenges before he or she becomes proficient in a particular area of learning, and I see my role as guiding, supporting and nurturing the 'lotus flower' during its upward journey.

Who I Can Help:
-
Primary school aged children who have a diagnosis of a Specific Learning Difficulty, such as dyslexia
-
Primary school aged children who are suspected to have an underlying learning difference due to them not making expected levels of progress for their age
-
Primary school aged children who have some other identified additional needs (to be discussed on a case by case basis)
What I Teach:
-
Literacy, including spelling (using a phonological and morphological approach), reading (accuracy and comprehension) and writing (composition and transcription skills), all at Key Stages 1 and 2
-
Maths at Key Stage 1 and 2
How I Teach:
I cater for a young person’s identified learning needs by using engaging, memorable and age-appropriate multi-sensory teaching and learning strategies. My aim is to intervene at the point where learning has broken down and to remediate any needs by using a learner’s strengths, giving him or her the optimum chance of success. The desired result is that of a young person who is more independent, self-reflective and confident in applying the strategies they have learned when back in the classroom.
During lessons I place significant emphasis on the fact that making mistakes is part of the learning process and I promote growth (rather than fixed) mindset attitudes. When teaching, I give choices, wherever possible, in order to encourage ‘buy in’ to the learning process and to increase the level of engagement. I also allow short movement breaks within a lesson if I feel that this is necessary or helpful for the individual learner.

Teaching sessions are available after school on weekdays (Monday - Thursday) until 6pm. Bookings for holiday sessions are also possible. Please contact me to find out about availability.

What To Expect
The process from start to finish usually involves:

-
A Preliminary Meeting
-
Initial Assessment and Planning of Teaching Programme
-
Series of Lessons (usually weekly and an hour's duration)
-
Within a lesson several targets will be taught, as research has shown that frequent transitions between targets enhance a learner's retention of the material taught.

N.B. All meetings and lessons will usually take place at my home.
